ABSTRACT
Work place violence (WPV) is common worldwide. Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at risk and
vulnerable to WPV when compared to other professions. Defined as ‘the act or threat of violence,
ranging from verbal abuse to physical assaults directed toward persons at work or on duty’.
Prevalence is 61.9% and is a serious cause of Public Health concern. It is underreported. Di
Martino model was adopted as the framework.
The study aimed to determine the prevalence and perceived prevention of WPV among HCWs in
Tertiary health institutions in Delta State. It was a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out
among 301 respondents (HCWs) obtained by multistage sampling technique with analysis done
using SPSS version 26.
Results revealed a high prevalence of 50.5% with majority of respondents recommending
provision of training programmes, reduction of patient waiting time. Age, sex, marital status,
qualification and years of experience were significantly associated with WPV. It was recommended that policies against WPV by management, provision of training for HCWs and
strengthening security at emergency units.
